This mistake can cause serious problems for the company. When the name of the product is displayed on the front label, there are specific regulations that must then be followed to avoid misbranding. Including one ingredient in the product as part of the name is a typical mistake that lands many companies in hot water. This could be deemed misbranding by the FDA because you are technically not sharing everything else that’s in the product. You either have to include all the ingredients in the name or none of them. For example, if you’re selling a soap that uses special ingredients such as tea tree oil, aloe, and coconut oil and you list tea tree oil as part of the name, it will sound like you’re selling a tea tree oil soap, which is not what it actually is.

Failing To Know When an Ingredients List Is Needed

Ingredients lists for cosmetic products can be a bit confusing. Most people would assume that it’s a complete violation not to include an ingredients list at all. However, this only really applies if you are making cosmetic claims. These are would-be statements on the label, such as stating that the product moisturizes your skin or clears up acne. In this case, the FDA has specific guidelines that include displaying what’s in the product to ensure all claims are backed up. The main importance of product labeling is that it protects your company from legal liabilities, so make sure to pay attention to these regulations.

Not Listing the Ingredients by Predominance

This is one of the common cosmetic label mistakes to avoid that easily gets overlooked. If you are required to include an ingredients list on your product packaging, you must list the ingredients in order of predominance according to their weight. This is standard is also set by the FDA. Also, make sure the ingredients are separated by commas only.

Forgetting To Bold the Net Weight

The net weight is meant to communicate to exactly how much of the product is in the container. First, the net weight needs to be displayed toward the bottom third of the principal display panel. Then, the net weight must be in bold to ensure the customer can easily see it.
